[18 July 2011] US President Barack Obama met with the Dalai Lama on 16 July despite warnings from China. The meeting at the White House lasted for 45 minutes and included discussions about the current human rights situation in Tibet, the Dalai Lama's future role and the stalled dialogue between the Dalai Lama's representatives and the Chinese government. The meeting came at the end of the Dalai Lama's two-week trip to the USA. |

[13 July 2011] Dozens of Tibetans have been detained in a new wave of protests in Kardze in Kham, eastern Tibet (Chinese: Ganzi, Sichuan province). Since 6 June, at least 15 separate peaceful demonstrations have taken place, calling for freedom, human rights and for the return to Tibet of the Dalai Lama. At least 39 Tibetans, including senior monks, nuns and laypeople, have been detained. The situation is described as "extremely tense", with an increased security presence in the area, armed troops patrolling the streets, roadblocks at every road junction and restrictions on the movement of local Tibetans. |

[28 June 2011] Disappointingly, the British government failed to take the opportunity of Wen Jiabao’s visit to deliver a strong message that China’s policies in Tibet and the ongoing abuses of human rights are not acceptable. Though Britain signed trade deals worth £1.4 billion Prime Minister Cameron only managed a weak public statement that human rights are "the best guarantor" for a stable and prosperous society. |

[10 June] News has been received that political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen has been removed from hard labour duties. Though still based in Xichuan Prison (a labour camp), for the past few months Dhondup has been given lighter work. There were concerns for Dhondup's health given the harsh working conditions at the prison and given he has been torturted and not receiving medical treatment for Hepatitis B, which he apparently contracted since his detention. His current state of health is not known. |
