Since the beginning of 2012 there has been a significant increase in the number of protests by Tibetans inside Tibet. Thousands of Tibetans have taken to the streets calling for an end to China's repressive policies. Since the begininng of 2012, 22 Tibetans have taken the drastic action of self-immolation, bringing the overall total to 35. The Chinese government's response has been heavy-handed and violent. Chinese security forces have opened fire on protestors, killing an unknown number of Tibetans, and many regions are under virtual lockdown.

On 17 May 1995, just three days after he was named as the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama and three weeks after his sixth birthday, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima disappeared along with his family. He was abducted by agencies of the Chinese government to become the world's youngest political prisoner. To date there has been no independent verification of his well-being or whereabouts.

The 53rd Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising will be commemorated in the UK with a series of events. On Wednesday 7 March there will be a Lobby of Parliament, where Tibetans and supporters will be directly lobbying their MPs and calling for action on Tibet. The Lobby will be preceded by a wreath-laying ceremony outside Westminster Abbey. On the day of the anniversary itself, Saturday 10 March, the annual Tibet Freedom March will take place through central London, finishing with a rally outside the Chinese Embassy. |
