UK must back up statement with practical measures PDF Print E-mail
[26 January] In response to the British government's statement yesterday, voicing concern over the situation in eastern Tibet, Tibet Society has issued a statement calling on the UK to follow up its concern with practical measures. Tibet supporters can take action by writing to the Foreign Minister and to the Chinese Ambassador.

ACTION: Self-immolations in Tibet PDF Print E-mail
Since March 2011, sixteen Tibetans have resorted to self-immolating to protest against the Chinese government's oppressive regime in Tibet. To date 14 monks (and former monks) and two nuns have taken this desperate action, 12 of whom are known to have died as a result. The condition and whereabouts of the others is not known, though some are reported to be in hospital.

ACTION: Dhondup Wangchen PDF Print E-mail
On 28 December 2009, following a trial behind closed doors, Dhondup Wangchen was given to a six-year prison sentence for conducting interviews to make a documentary. The resulting film, Leaving Fear Behind, follows Dhondup’s journey around Tibet in early 2008 where he interviewed Tibetans, asking them for their thoughts and views on the upcoming Olympic Games, the Dalai Lama and Chinese government policies in Tibet. Please take action for his release.

Jigme Guri arrested; whereabouts unknown PDF Print E-mail
On 20 August, Jigme Guri, a monk who in 2008 bravely gave video testimony about China's occupation of Tibet, was arrested by Chinese officials in Tsoe city, Gansu province. This is the fourth time Jigme has been seized and detained, the first being in 2006 after travelling to India for Kalachakra initiations given by the Dalai Lama. The next two instances were in 2008, the second of which followed a broadcast by Voice of America of his video evidence.

Tibet's longest serving political prisoner in critical condition PDF Print E-mail
[7 September] Lobsang Tenzin, the longest serving Tibetan political prisoner, is reported to be in a critical health condition. According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) Lobsang's health has seriously deteriorated, with complications arising from his diabetic condition. His eyesight has weakened causing intermittent blindness. He also suffers from with damaged kidneys and has extreme difficulty in standing.
