URGENT ACTION: Appeal against death sentences passed on two Tibetans PDF Print E-mail
On 8 April 2009, Lhasa Municipal Intermediate People's Court tried and sentenced five Tibetans behind closed doors in three separate cases related to arson attacks in March 2008 in Lhasa. Two of the five Tibetans were given death sentences - Lobsang Gyaltsen and Loyak.

Image[March 2008] Since 14 March horrifying news has been coming out of Tibet about the heavy handed crackdown by Chinese authorities on Tibetan people holding demonstrations or marches following the 49th anniversary of the 10th March Tibetan peoples’ uprising against Chinese occupation. From information and reports coming out of Lhasa and other Tibetan regions, it appears at least 100 people have been killed, with many more injured. From 18 March foreign journalists have been expelled from the area and there is now a very real danger that the authorities will carry out a regime of severe repression and torture to quash any form of dissension in Tibet. Chinese police are already rounding up and arresting Tibetans in Lhasa.
