[19 March 2014] On 12 March, Tibetans and Tibet supporters met members of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tibet (APPGT) during the Tibet Lobby at Houses of Parliament in London. A lively round-table discussion was held with questions being asked of MPs and a discussion on a variety of topics relating to the Tibet issue and parliamentary processes.

Tibet at heart of MPs debate on UK relations with China PDF Print E-mail

[22 November 2013] On 19 November, Westminster Hall in the House of Commons hosted a three-hour debate on the UK's relations with China. With the recent trade deals between the two countries and the Prime Ministers upcoming trip to China in early December, the economic relationship was expected to dominate. However, MPs consistently raised human rights, with the issue of Tibet being a significant component of the debate.

UK government calls on China to commute Tibetan death sentence PDF Print E-mail

[3 September 2013] Foreign Secretary William Hague has called upon the Chinese government to commute the death sentence of Tibetan nomad Dolma Gyab and to give him a reprieve. Dolma Gyab was sentenced to death for allegedly murdering his wife who self-immolated in March. Hague also called for "free and fair" trials in China that are "in line with international standards".

Cameron: UK government "does not support Tibetan independence" PDF Print E-mail

[9 May 2013] During the debate on the Queen's Speech in Parliament on 8 May, David Cameron clarified the UK's position on Tibet. The Prime Minister stated that the British government recognises Tibet as part of China and "does not support Tibetan independence". He said this had been a "long-standing British policy" which had not changed, and that the government was seeking a "strong and positive relationship" with China.

Lords debate highlights out of date government policy on Tibet PDF Print E-mail

[27 February 2013] A debate in the House of Lords on 26 February has highlighted the British government's out of date policy on Tibet. Whilst reiterating its "deep concern" over the self-immolations in Tibet, the government called for the resumption of "substantive dialogues" between China and the Dalai Lama. However, the Dalai Lama relinquished his political role in 2011, passing on his duties to the Sikyong (Prime Minister of the Tibetan government in exile).

British government expresses "serious concern" over Tibet crisis PDF Print E-mail

[18 December 2012] The British government has expressed "serious concern" about the current situation in Tibet. It has urged the Chinese authorities in Tibet to "exercise restraint" and called upon the Chinese government to allow "unrestricted access" to Tibetan area for diplomats, international media and concerned parties.

British government calls on China to resolve Tibetan grievances PDF Print E-mail

[9 November 2012] The British government was questioned in the House of Lords yesterday on their response to the ongoing self-immolations in Tibet. Baroness Warsi, Senior Foreign Office Minister, responded saying the government has raised concerns with the Chinese government and is pressing "for a meaningful resolution to the grievances that underlie these distressing events".
