Photos emerge of two monks who self-immolated PDF Print E-mail
[16 December 2011] Photographs of Kayang and Choephel, who died after self-immolating in Ngaba on 7 October, have been received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. They are the first images to be seen outside of Tibet of the two former Kirti monks.

Kirti monastery under military lockdown PDF Print E-mail
Kirti monastery, located in Ngaba County, Amdo (Ch: Sichuan province), is currently subject to a military lockdown, imposed by the Chinese authorities. The lockdown came in response to protests that followed the death and self-immolation of Phunstsok, a monk from Kirti monastery on 16 March. Many Tibetans have been arrested and two Tibetans were killed on 21 April. Over 300 monks have been removed from the monastery and at least seven Kirti monks have received prison sentences. There are restrictions on movement, fears of food shortages at the monastery and a curtailment on religious activities. Over 2,000 remaining resident monks are also being subject to 'political re-education'.

Tenzin Phuntsok dies from injuries; wife detained PDF Print E-mail
[9 December 2011] The former monk who self-immolated on 1 December in protest against China's repression in Tibet, has died. Tenzin Phuntsok succumbed to his injuries on 6 December in a hospital in Chamdo, Tibet Autonomous Region. Of the 12 Tibetans who have set fire to themselves this year, Tenzin is the seventh known to have died. The condition of the remaining five remains unclear.

First self-immolation in Tibet Autonomous Region PDF Print E-mail
[2 December 2011] A former monk set himself on fire in Khamar township, Chamdo prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, on 1 December in a protest against China's ongoing repression. Tenzin Phuntsok is believed to have survived and was taken to hospital. This is the first known self-immolation to have taken place in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and the 12th this year. All the previous immolations had taken place in Tibetan regions which China amalgamated into Chinese provinces.
