These messages were read out at the Dalai Lama's birthday celebrations: Tibet Festival in the Park on Saturday 3 July. They were also printed onto special windhorses (paper prayer flags) and sent with over 400 messages written by supporters to the Dalai Lama's office in Dharamsala.

Your Holiness, these birthday greetings bring love and admiration in equal measure. You have set an example to us all in your unwavering search for a peaceful solution to the oppression of Tibet: your grace and kindliness makes me ashamed that our country will not do more to persuade the Chinese administration that Tibet is a country of itself, with its own language, customs, religion, culture and spirit.
On this summer's day in London I send to you my thoughts and prayers and hopes: and happy birthday wishes from me, Joanna Lumley.
Your Holiness. You are a tremendous inspiration to millions of people of all nations and denominations across the globe. On this very special day I would like to send you my deepest respect and admiration, as well as personally wishing you many more years of robust strength and health.
My earnest wish is that one day, in the not too distant future, your people, the Tibetans, will be awarded their freedom and human rights, so that they will no longer be forced to live as refugees in exile from their own country and culture. The Western world recognises you as one of the greatest living ambassadors for peace, and we are humbled by your patient example, and continued message of compassion and kindness.
With love and gratitude from Annie Lennox
