[10 June] News has been received that political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen has been removed from hard labour duties. Though still based in Xichuan Prison (a labour camp), for the past few months Dhondup has been given lighter work. There were concerns for Dhondup's health given the harsh working conditions at the prison and given he has been torturted and not receiving medical treatment for Hepatitis B, which he apparently contracted since his detention. His current state of health is not known.
The change in work duties may be linked to Dhondup's heightened profile due to the campaigning efforts of Tibet groups and supporters around the world. Dhondup's wife, Lhamo Tso, has met with a number of European government officials and continues to actively campaign for her husband's release.
A new short film has been produced by International Tibet Network, which highlights a personal and moving letter written to Dhondup by his daughter Dhadon. The film concludes by asking individuals to write their own letters to Dhondup. A letter-writng guide, including Tibetan and Chinese text to include in your letter, can be downloaded.
