Tibet Society welcomes inauguration of first secular Kalon Tripa PDF Print E-mail
[5 August] On Monday 8 August, Dr Lobsang Sangay will be formally inaugurated as Kalon Tripa (Prime Minister) of the Tibetan government in exile. Dr Sangay will become the first secular head directly elected by the Tibetan people.

Lobsang SangayTibet Society welcomes the appointment of Dr Sangay as Kalon Tripa and will be asking Foreign Secretary William Hague to meet Dr Sangay as well as calling on the British government to reaffirm its commitment to finding a solution to the Tibet issue.

In a press release issued on 5 August, Philippa Carrick, CEO of Tibet Society, congratulated Dr Sangay "on behalf of all members of Tibet Society" adding that Dr Sangay "will bring a new dynamism and fresh thinking to Tibetan politics and we are very much looking forward to supporting him in working to bring justice to Tibet."

The press release also included a commentary by Dr Fiona McConnell, an academic expert on unrecognised states, which highlights recent developments and new approaches to international politics in areas where change has been prompted by the actions of a disenchanted population, such as in Libya. Dr McConnell posits that world governments should now also consider recognising the Tibetan government in exile as a legitimate body given they are also representative of a populace struggling for freedom.

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Tibet, for which Tibet Society is the Secretariat, has sent a letter of congratulations to Dr Sangay. In the letter, Fabian Hamilton MP, Chairman of the APPGT, says, "We look forward to working with you in the future and doing as much as we can to help you bring about constructive progress towards freedom for the Tibetan people, something we all wish to see."
