Tibet's longest serving political prisoner in critical condition PDF Print E-mail
[7 September] Lobsang Tenzin, the longest serving Tibetan political prisoner, is reported to be in a critical health condition. According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) Lobsang's health has seriously deteriorated, with complications arising from his diabetic condition. His eyesight has weakened causing intermittent blindness. He also suffers from with damaged kidneys and has extreme difficulty in standing.

Lobsang TenzinLobsang was arrested in 1988 for participating in a protest in Lhasa calling for Tibetan freedom. At the time he was in his mid-twenties and a student of the TAR Tibet University. He was initially sentenced to death with two years reprieve, but in 1991 the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

Whilst in prison, Lobsang continued to speak out. In 1989 he wrote a letter supporting the pro-independence demonstrations and formed a group with fellow prisoners called Snow Lion Youth for Tibetan independence. In March 1991 Lobsang and another prisoner were tortured after being caught trying to hand a letter to the visiting US Ambassador which contained the names and condition of all the political prisoners.

Lobsang is currently in Chushul (Ch: Qushui) prison in Lhasa, having previously been held in the Powo Tramo prison in Kongpo, eastern Tibet and initially in Drapchi prison in Lhasa.
