[26 October] The tenth occurrence this year of a self-immolation by a Tibetan protesting against Chinese rule took place in Kardze, eastern Tibet (Sichuan province) yesterday. Dawa Tsering, a 31 year-old monk from Kardze monastery is believed to be in critical condition. Security personnel have since cordoned off the monastery.

Dawa TseringDawa Tsering's protest took place at approximately 9.30am on 25 October. Dawa set himself alight during an annual religious dance ceremony (Cham). During his protest Dawa shouted for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet and for equality and freedom for the Tibetan people in Tibet.

Fellow monks extinguished the flames and rushed Dawa to the local hospital. According to a source speaking to Radio Free Asia, Dawa is badly burnt, has refused medication and told the monks to let him die. After being covered in bandages, Dawa was taken back to Kardze monastery.

On 15 August, Tsewang Norbu, from Nyitso monastery, Tawu county in Kardze prefecture, died after setting fire to himself. The other eight took place in Ngaba; seven by monks from Kirti monastery in Ngaba and one by a nun from Dechen Choekorling nunnery.
