Teenage nun dies after self-immolating in Ngaba PDF Print E-mail
[13 February] Tenzin Choedron became the 10th Tibetan this year to self-immolate, when she set fire to herself on Saturday 11 February in Ngaba, eastern Tibet. The 18-year old nun from Dechen Choekorling nunnery shouted slogans against the Chinese government during her protest. She died whilst being taken to hospital.

Tenzin ChoedronThe incident occured at about 6pm on 11 February on a road near Dechen Choekorling nunnery. Witnesses said she was still alive when Chinese security took her away. However, Chinese state media have since confirmed that Tenzin died before reaching hospital.

Following the protest, Dechen Choekorling nunnery was surrounded and sealed off by Chinese security personnel. The nunnery is the largest in the region with more than 350 nuns.

Tenzin Choedron (pictured right) is the third nun known to have self-immolated, and the second from Dechen Choekorling nunnery. On 17 October 2011, 20-year old Tenzin Wangmo, a nun from the same nunnery, died following a self-immolation protest. Palden Choesang, a 35-year old nun from Gaden Choeling nunnery in Tawu, Kardze (Sichuan province), died on 3 November 2011 after setting fire to herself.

There have now been 19 self-immolations by Tibetans in the past 12 months,  13 of whom are known to have died. Tenzin Choedron's self-immolation is the seventh known to have occured in the first six weeks of 2012.
