Kirti monk succumbs to self-immolation injuries PDF Print E-mail
[4 March 2012] Reports have been received that Rinzin Dorjee, the Kirti monk who self-immolated on 8 February, died from his injuries on 21 February. His family were not allowed to hold a traditional funeral. Another monk, Lobsang Kunchok, who immolated in September 2011, remains in serious condition in hospital.

Following his self-immolation, Chinese security forces took Rinzin Dorjee (aka Rikpe) to a county hospital. He survived for nearly two weeks, but finally succumbed to his injuries on 21 February. Rinzin's family requested to be given the body so traditional Buddhist rituals could be performed. However their requests were denied by the Chinese authorities and Rinzin's body was cremated without ceremony.

Rinzin Dorje is the 16th Tibetan known to have died following a self-immolation protest in the past 12 months.

Lobsang KunchokAnother Kirti monk, Lobsang Kunchok (pictured), who self-immolated on 26 September 2011, is understood to have had all his limbs amputated and is having to be fed through a pipe in his neck. The Chinese authorities have denied family members from visiting Lobsang and he is reportedly being abused by Chinese staff and officials at the hospital where he is being treated.
