President Obama due to meet the Dalai Lama PDF Print E-mail
[21 February 2014] It has been announced that the US President is due to meet the Dalai Lama in Washington today. The Chinese government has already responded, calling for the meeting to be cancelled and saying the meeting would "seriously impair China-US relations".

The Dalai Lama and Barack ObamaA US government spokesperson said the meeting will be held in private in the Map Room of the White House, rather than the Oval Office where foreign leaders and dignitaries are usually met. Obama will meet the Dalai Lama "in his capacity as an internationally respected religious and cultural leader".

This will be the third meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, the last meeting being in 2011.

The Chinese government has already criticised the meeting and called for the meeting to be cancelled. An official statement issued by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, "China is firmly opposed to this [meeting]. We urge the US side to treat China's concern in a serious way and immediately cancel the planned meeting.

The statement continued, The US leader's meeting with the Dalai is a gross interference in China's internal affairs, a severe violation of codes of international relations and will seriously impair China-US relations."
