Father of four self-immolates in eastern Tibet PDF Print E-mail
[21 May 2015] A 35 year-old man has become the fourth Tibetan to self-immolate in Tibet this year. The protest took place in Tawu, eastern Tibet on 20 May. Due to communication blackouts following the protest, it is not known whether Tenzin Gyatso survived or not.

Tenzin GyatsoTenzin Gyatso, aged 35 and father of four, set himself ablaze at 8pm local time on 20 May in Tawu (Chinese: Dawu) county, Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) prefecture, Kham (now incorporated into China's Sichuan province). The protest took place outside of a venue where local government officials were meeting. Sources indicate police arrived within minutes and took Tenzin away.

Immediately following the protest, communications in the region were blocked, so Tenzin's current condition is not known.

Reports indicate Tenzin's protest was in response to recent security crackdowns in the region. Chinese security forces have been deployed apparently to prevent public disorder in the run up to the Dalai Lamas 80th birthday on 6 July.

This is the 139th self-immolation by a Tibetan in Tibet since 2009. It is the fourth self-immolation to occur this year, following those of
Norchuk on 5 March, Yeshi Khando on 8 April and Neykyab on 21 April.

(Note: Some reports refer to 140 self-immolations, which include the self-immolation of a Tibetan in Beijing in 2012. Six Tibetans in exile are also known to have self-immolated.)
