Public Lecture: 'Rivals : How the power struggle between China, India and Japan will shape our next decade'

Bill Emmott and Alastair Newton will discuss Bill Emmott’s latest book on Rivals in Asia. China plus India plus Japan equals opportunity, tension and danger. Bill Emmott is the former chief editor of The Economist. Alastair Newton is managing director and senior political analyst at Lehman Brothers. Dr Eva Nag is visiting fellow at the Centre for International Studies.

After fifty years in exile the Dalai Lama and his Tibetan exile community face an impending crisis that may result in their culture losing its identity and disappearing forever.  This documentary examines the difficulties confronting Tibetans in exile as they struggle to adapt to the increasing intrusion of the modern world.
 
'The Tibetans. A Life in Exile' will premier in the the UK at the Tricycle Cinema Kilburn London at 3 p.m. on Sunday May 18th and will be followed by a Q and A with the director Robb Bradstock.
 
There will be a another screening at The Broadway Cinema, Nottingham with a Q and A on Monday 26 May during the Dalai Lama's visit to Nottingham

19 May: 'Wild China' Lecture
‘BBC Worldwide’, the BBC's commercial arm, recently announced its first ever co-production in China. The natural history series, ‘Wild China’, will see a partnership between the BBC's Natural History Unit and China Television Media (CTV), the production arm of Chinese state broadcaster, CCTV.’
 
Gavin Maxwell was involved in this project at the outset, working to a corporate budget, choosing shoot locations, engaging camera crew and organising filming expeditions. He spent many months working in the field, liaising directly with both the Chinese and the Tibetans. Post-production work in the UK included film editing, sourcing musical scores, writing commentaries and recording the final presentation.
 
Following the satisfactory completion of this series, Gavin will quit his BBC staff position at the end of the summer to develop his own creative vocation.
 
He leaves with a string of credits to his name. The BBC write ‘Gavin Maxwell was a director on the innovative Eyewitness television series before joining the Natural History Unit as an assistant producer on ‘Wildlife Special: Crocodile’. He has recently worked as a director and producer on ‘Predators, Venom and Animals, The Inside Story….’

‘Crocodile’ was followed by the widely acclaimed film ‘Nile’, a four-part series broadcast in 2004.
The current production, ‘Wild China’, is a six-part series which is to be broadcast at the end of this month. He also contributed both written and photographic material for the accompanying ‘BBC Books’ publications for these series.
In the meantime he will be presenting a lecture entitled ‘Wild China’ at the RGS on Monday 19th May.
(Attendance is limited  to members of the RGS and their guests. )

25 May: An Afternoon of Discussion with the Dalai Lama
Dharma Network 2008, in conjunction with Nottingham Evening Post, is running two competitions. Young people in full-time education are asked to submit questions they would like to put in person to the Dalai Lama on the topic Caring for Our World and children of all ages are invited to submit a poem.

Is China-bashing the new Olympic sport?  When does valid criticism turn into demonisation?

The rise of China as an economic and political power is the subject of much debate in the West.  The dramatic awakening of the 'sleeping giant' sometimes seems to provoke as much fear as admiration.  
This day of discussions aims to provide some balance and allow participants to reflect on and debate some of the key themes and issues.
 
The Battle for China is a one-day satellite conference of the Battle of Ideas festival organised by the Institute of Ideas, and is part of the CHINA NOW festival.
