EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEER NURSE WANTED FOR TIBETAN REFUGEE SETTLEMENT FROM DECEMBER 2006 TO MAY 2007

The job is based at Dzogchen Monastery near the town of Kollegal in Karnataka, between Bangalore and Mysore.

This is a voluntary post and would suit an experienced nurse who is interested in offering his or her skills (minimum experience 3 years) in a small clinic at Dzogchen Monastery which offers basic healthcare to monks and villagers and who would like to live a simple, spiritual life. We regret that we are unable to offer reimbursement for travel or any other costs. There is a minimal charge of Rs50 (about 60p) per day to cover food and accommodation. As well as living in the monastery guesthouse with Tibetans and Westerners, you will have the opportunity, if you wish, to learn Tibetan and study Tibetan Buddhism. If we think that you are a suitable candidate, we will ask you to meet H.E. Dzogchen Rinpoche, the head of Dzogchen Monastery, at the monastery in December 2006, who will then make the final selection.

ENGLISH TEACHER WANTED FOR TIBETAN REFUGEE SETTLEMENT

You will work alongside teachers to support written and conversational English for Tibetan children in classes 5 (aged10+) and 6 (aged 11+) at the local school. At this point they are making the transition from Tibetan medium to having all their lessons in English and desperately need the extra help. Teaching materials are limited, so you would need to be creative and resourceful. You do not need to be a trained teacher but a TESL qualification would be useful.

Long-term volunteering opportunities
There is a wide range of long-term volunteer opportunities in and around McLeod Ganj. Organisations such as the Tibetan Welfare Office, the Tibetan Library, the Tibetan Women’s Associations, the Tibet Institute of Performing Arts, Tibet Museum, the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, various monasteries and nunneries, and offices of the Government-in-Exile frequently offer volunteer opportunities.  Volunteers should be prepared to make a minimum commitment of 3 months. 

LHA is a non-profit community social work programme founded in 1997, providing social services in McLeod Ganj and Dharamsala to both Tibetan refugees and local residents.  Programmes include a Language and Computer School, Medical Aid, Clothing Distribution, Hygiene Education and Water Supply and volunteer opportunities exist relating to these programmes. Tibetan Children’s Education Centre runs courses that aim to increase literacy amongst Tibetans and promote global communication.  Volunteer English and French teachers required on a long/short term basis.

Multi Education Centre – volunteers are required at the school to help advanced students improve their conversational English.

The Dogga School requires teaching and class assistants for English language and Computer courses.
